Our Namesake & Mission
Nathan Hale - America's First Intelligence Officer

Nathan Hale

1755-1776

The Original Patriot

Nathan Hale was a 21-year-old Connecticut schoolteacher who became America's first intelligence officer. When General Washington desperately needed information about British forces in 1776, only one man answered the call to cross enemy lines.

Disguised as a schoolmaster, Hale penetrated British lines on Long Island. When captured, he faced execution without trial. On the gallows, he displayed extraordinary composure, viewing his sacrifice as his duty to country.

"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country"
